New to pickleball
It's the easiest racquet sport to pick up — most people are rallying within ten minutes. Here's everything worth knowing before your first visit.
There are more, but nobody will mind if you don't know them yet. These are the ones that shape the game.
Contact below the waist, from behind the baseline, into the diagonal box. One attempt in most social play.
The return of serve must bounce, and so must the serve. After those two bounces you can volley out of the air.
The seven-foot zone at the net. You can stand in it, but you can't volley while you're there — that's the rule that stops the game becoming a smash-fest.
Only the serving side scores. Games are quick, which is why a session usually means several of them.
Court shoes
Anything with a flat, non-marking sole. Running shoes are fine to start; they're just less forgiving on the side-to-side.
A paddle
If you don't own one yet, ask when you book — and check with whoever you're playing, since most regulars carry a spare.
Water
Games are short but relentless. You'll want more than you expect.
Nothing else
No special clothing, no membership card, no paperwork.
